Yulla Kanda Weather in May

May is one of the best months to visit Yulla Kanda. Daytime temperatures range between 15–20°C with crisp nights around 3–8°C. The rhododendron forests are in full bloom — red and pink flowers line the entire trail from the trailhead to the tree line.

The temple typically reopens in mid-to-late May after winter, so confirm the opening date before travelling. Skies are clear and visibility of the surrounding Kinnaur peaks is at its best in May.

Is there snow in May? Some residual snowpatches remain on the upper sections of the trail (above 3,500 m) in early May. By late May, the trail is generally clear. Trekking poles are useful early in the month.

Yulla Kanda Weather in June

June is warm and pleasant for trekking with 18–22°C days and nights around 5–10°C. The trail is fully clear of snow and the forest is lush and green.

The main caution in June is afternoon cloud build-up — pre-monsoon weather systems can roll in quickly from the west. Start your trek no later than 5–6 AM to reach the summit before clouds obscure the views. Early starters get crystal-clear skies and golden-hour light at the temple lake.

Yulla Kanda temperature in June at the top: At the summit (3,895 m), expect temperatures of 8–14°C during the day and near 0°C at night. Carry a warm layer even if it’s warm below.

June is ideal for both day treks and overnight camping.

Is There Snow in Yulla Kanda?

Yes, snow is part of the Yulla Kanda experience — but when you encounter it depends on the season:

  • May (early): Residual snow patches above 3,500 m. Trail passable with care.
  • May (late) to October: Trail is generally snow-free. Some patches may remain in sheltered gullies.
  • November onwards: Heavy snowfall closes the trail. The temple closes.
  • December to April: The entire route is buried under 3–6 feet of snowpack. Inaccessible without mountaineering equipment.

If you want to see snow without it being a problem, visit in late May or early June — you’ll see snowfields above the treeline without any trail obstruction.

The Best Months: September and October

If you can only go once, go in September or October. The monsoon has washed the haze away, leaving crystal-clear skies and the most dramatic mountain views of the year. The forest is lush and green, temperatures are comfortable for trekking (8–15°C days), and crowds are minimal.

October gets chillier — carry an extra layer — but the golden autumn foliage on the forest trail is spectacular. Night temperatures can drop to -2–4°C at the summit in October, so bring a quality sleeping bag if camping.

Avoid: July and August (Mostly)

The monsoon brings heavy rain that makes the trail slippery and the approach roads prone to landslides. July is not recommended for trekking here.

August is the exception: Janmashtami (Lord Krishna’s birthday) brings thousands of pilgrims to the temple. It’s a genuinely extraordinary spiritual experience if you’re prepared for wet weather and crowds. Book accommodation in Tapri or Rampur well in advance.

Skip: November to April

The temple closes, the road to Yulla Khas village gets blocked by snow, and the trail disappears under several feet of snowpack. Unless you’re an experienced winter mountaineer with proper gear, there’s simply no access.
